The Pine Cones, Sicilian Lucky Charms

Since time immemorial and in different civilizations the fruit of the pine tree represents fertility and immortality. Sicilian pine cones are very common on the island. There is no area where they are not used to wish luck to newlyweds, to express authority and spirituality by placing them on the gateposts of villas and gardens.

Sicilian pine cones are the symbol of a tradition that has been handed down to the present day, for which they boast a pride of Sicilian art. The use of pine cones in Sicily is lost in the mists of time and is distinguished from any other type of decorative pine cone by the method with which they are made!

Each pine cone is made on the lathe, by hand. The lathe forms the cone, which forms the main body of the pine cone, and the base. After an initial quick drying, the grains are applied to the pine cone cone. This work is done by hand, one grain at a time. After forming a small roll of clay, the craftsman uses only two fingers and applies the grain in one movement. Thanks to the use of the fingertips with a typical shape that perfectly imitate the grains of the real pine cone.
